Man Takes Plea In Toddlers Rape

A Converse man facing 25 years to life in prison without parole for the super aggravated sexual assault of a 3 year old girl pleaded guilty Thursday to a lesser charge. In exchange, prosecutors agreed to charge James C. Leija with a version of sexual assault in which he still faces up to life in prison but will be able to request parole someday.

Leija has applied to Stae District judge Mary Roman for probation and is set to be sentenced in November. He was arrested in August 2010 after the child’s grandmother heard her crying and went to check on her, catching Leija in the act. DNA from a rape kit matched Leija.
